California Assembly Member Reggie Jones-Sawyer recently introduced Assembly Bill 1610, aimed at protecting cannabis consumers and the legal cannabis market by improving testing and labeling standards. This bill represents Jones-Sawyer’s effort to maintain the high quality of California cannabis products while ensuring public safety and transparency.
A growing concern in California is the trend of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) inflation, where brands and labels often overstate THC levels in products to charge higher prices. A recent sample of 150 randomly chosen legal California cannabis products revealed that 87% had inaccurately high THC potency labels. This is problematic as consumers unknowingly purchase and consume mislabeled products, paying a premium for a false promise.
Additionally, cannabis recalls in California, Michigan, Colorado, and Oklahoma have identified unsafe levels of mold, yeast, E. coli, and salmonella in products. These issues pose serious health risks and have led to multiple class-action lawsuits.
AB 1610 aims to address these challenges by improving transparency and trust in the cannabis marketplace. The bill mandates audits, shelf product testing, and blind proficiency lab testing. It also requires that product recalls be publicly reported online, fostering greater accountability between the state, dispensaries, and consumers.
The bill further stipulates that all licensed labs undergo annual audits by the Department of Cannabis Control. These audits demand honesty and transparency from cannabis businesses, ensuring that the public is informed about potentially unsafe products or companies.
AB 1610’s provisions strengthen protections for consumers, improve labeling accuracy, and enhance safety within the cannabis industry, helping to build trust and transparency across the board.
