If you live in Southern California, you’ve no doubt grown up understanding that you live in earthquake country.
The team at Swarts, Manning & Associates wants to make sure that you and your family are protected. If you don’t have an earthquake kit, we recommend you check out this list from the Red Cross. In the event of an earthquake, you will want to make sure you and your family have a safety and evacuation plan in place. Lives cannot be replaced; property can. But only if you’re covered.
While we are no strangers to larger quakes, we haven’t experienced a period like the summer of 2019 in quite a while. The Ridgecrest earthquake we experienced in July was the strongest to jolt Southern California in some 20 years.
If the main quake wasn’t scary enough for people there, the quake literally sent shockwaves through Southern California with more than 100,000 aftershocks. Seismologists have been studying fault lines across the country. Earthquakes aren’t just a California phenomenon. We see more along the west coast, into the Midwest, and even on the east coast. Case in point: Virginia in 2011 and Delaware in 2017.
The two quakes on the east coast in the last ten years had quite a reach. According to the United States Geological Survey, earthquakes east of the Rocky Mountains can cause noticeable ground shaking at much farther distances than comparably-sized earthquakes in the West.
While there is no ability to predict that a major earthquake will strike, the experts warn us that a major earthquake can happen at any time.
Most people may not be sure if they are insured in the event of an earthquake. Homeowner policies rarely have earthquake insurance. In the rare case that it is included, you likely will be paying more, and it will likely have lower limits than the rest of the policy.
